260 young pianists applied for the tenth Carl Bechstein Piano Competition for Children and Young People. 70 participants were selected in a video round and impressed the top-class jury and the audience from October 18th to 20th in the Kulturstall of Schloss Britz in Berlin. The strong performances were rewarded with prizes totaling around 10,000 euros (including more special prizes than ever before).
The competition was held for the fourth time in the “Piano Solo” category. And the newly introduced video round also had an impact on the days at Britz:
“The competition had an extremely pleasing standard throughout – right up to outstanding performances,” explained Prof. Stephan Imorde, chairman of the jury. “We can only congratulate the Carl Bechstein Foundation on this wonderful initiative to promote young pianists!”
In addition to Prof. Imorde, Prof. Sheila Arnold, Wei Chen, Prof. Christian Petersen and Prof. Annika Treutler were part of this year’s competent jury, which had no easy task with such a dense, top-class field of participants.
The artistic quality of even the youngest participants is always amazing: for example, nine-year-old Toni Gu from Düsseldorf, first prize winner in age group I, opened the prizewinners’ concert with a very transparent interpretation of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D major BWV 850. Due to the extremely high standard of this age group, ten-year-old Frieda Magdalena Hollmer from Cologne was also awarded a first prize: She played two movements from Georg Kröll’s “Diary for Piano” at the prizewinners’ concert, for which she also received the special prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary work in her age group.
Twelve-year-old Adriana Vasilski from Munich, first prize winner in age group II, played the opening Allegro from Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 31 No. 3 with a musical maturity one would hardly expect from such a young person. Nia Khundadze (14) from Berlin won first prize in age group III and also received a special prize from the Hindemith Foundation.
Kaiji Wang (16) from Leipzig, who mastered one of the most difficult works of the piano repertoire, Ravel’s “La Valse”, in an impressive final performance, was rewarded with the first prize in the age group 4 and the concert prize of Schloss Britz.
For the first time, a special prize was awarded for the best interpretation of a rarely played romantic work: Celina Höferlin (14) from Mainz made the C. Bechstein concert grand D 282 sing beautifully in Automne from Cécile Chaminade’s Études de concert op. 35.
Other special prizes were donated by the Friends of Schloss Britz (concert engagement), the Fireworks Academy (free participation in a one-week master class), and Bärenreiter (music vouchers with a total value of 1,000 euros).
The next Carl Bechstein Competition will take place from November 7 to 9, 2025 at Schloss Britz and will be held in the category “Piano and one string instrument”.

The Carl Bechstein Competition aims to convey the joy of making music, to provide long-term support for young musicians and to reward outstanding achievements by young people.
The Carl Bechstein Foundation has been organising this competition for children and young people every year since 2014, alternating between solo and chamber music ensembles.
We are delighted to be able to welcome young piano soloists again in 2024. A competition is a great additional motivation not only to prepare one’s own repertoire for a concert, but perhaps also to make new friends.
The competition is open to young musicians who will not have reached the age of 18 on the closing date (18 October 2024) and who have been resident in Germany for at least six months.
The registration deadline has been reached, it is no longer possible to register for the Carl Bechstein Competition 2024.

The Fondation Hindemith has awarded a special Hindemith prize of 300 euros per duo in each of the age groups 3 and 4 for the most convincing interpretation of an original work by Paul Hindemith. The foundation, established by Paul Hindemith’s widow Gertrud in her will, is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the cultural legacy that exists in the musical and literary estate of Paul Hindemith.

Evaluation criteria
The judging is based exclusively on the performance during the competition. The main criteria for the assessment are Artistic design, sound quality, playing technique, fidelity to the text and stylistic understanding. Playing from memory will not be judged in particular.
The jury is not obliged to award all prizes. The jury’s decisions are final. Legal recourse is excluded.

Die Kulturstiftung Schloss Britz ist Mitveranstalter des Carl Bechstein Klavierwettbewerbs für Kinder und Jugendliche, stellt den Kulturstall von Schloss Britz für den Wettbewerb zur Verfügung und unterstützt den Wettbewerb auch im Bereich der Organisation.
Die Kulturstiftung Schloss Britz gewährleistet seit 1989 das umfangreiche kulturelle Angebot im Schloss Britz, das von Ausstellungen über Lesungen bis zu Konzerten reicht. Schloss Britz ist ein kulturelles Kleinod im Berliner Bezirk Neukölln. Das prächtige Gutshaus im Berliner Bezirk Neukölln wurde 1706 an der Stelle eines mittelalterlichen Fachwerkhauses erbaut. Im 18. Jahrhundert war das Herrenhaus im Besitz hochrangiger preußischer Hofbeamter und Staatsminister. 1971 wurde Schloss Britz unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. Der Berliner Bezirk Neukölln restaurierte das Schloss und rekonstruierte die dazugehörige Parkanlage von 1985 bis 1988. Der nach vierjähriger Umbauzeit 2011 neu eröffnete „Kulturstall“ von Schloss Britz (der ehemalige Kuhstall) bietet rund 280 Sitzplätze und verfügt über eine große Bühne, die Orchesterauftritte und Opernvorstellungen möglich macht, aber auch dem Carl Bechstein Klavierwettbewerb eine ideale Räumlichkeit bieten wird.
Die Musikschule Paul-Hindemith-Neukölln ist im ehemaligen Gutsverwalterhaus von Schloss Britz untergebracht und wird den Teilnehmern des Carl Bechstein Klavierwettbewerb Einspielräume zur Verfügung stellen.
Die Musikschule Paul Hindemith Neukölln wurde 1927 gegründet und gehört zu den drei ältesten staatlichen Musikschulen in Deutschland. Hohe pädagogische und künstlerische Qualität, ein breites Unterrichtsangebot und eine starke soziale und interkulturelle Ausrichtung prägen das Bild der Musikschule. Zurzeit unterrichten etwa 200 fast ausschließlich freiberufliche Lehrkräfte insgesamt über 4.000 Schülerinnen und Schüler. Das Angebot der Musikschule umfasst über 60 instrumentale/vokale Lehrfächer/Genres im Einzel- und Gruppenunterricht bzw. im Kurs- oder Ensembleunterricht. Zu den Besonderheiten der Musikschule gehören Spezialausbildungen als Vorbereitung auf ein Musikstudium für alle vokalen und instrumentalen Hauptfächer, Musical und Musiktheater sowie Tontechnik und Komposition.
Das Programm des traditionsreichen klassischen Musikverlags Bärenreiter (gegründet 1923) mit Hauptsitz in Kassel umfasst eine Vielzahl an wissenschaftlich fundierten Partituren, Notenbüchern, Klavierauszügen, Chorwerken (Urtextausgaben) und Büchern. Dazu wurden Gesamtausgaben mit den Werken von großen Komponisten wie Bach, Händel, Mozart & Schubert als Urtext veröffentlicht.
Zu den zahlreichen Büchern aus dem Bärenreiter Verlag gehören neben Musiklexika, Lehrmaterial über Musiktheorie und Aufführungspraxis die Musikenzyklopädie MGG (Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart). Das Werk umfasst 29 Bände und einen Supplementband und gilt als Standardlexikon der Musikwissenschaft.
Jedes Jahr seit 2017 besuchen elf Ausnahmetalente die Klavierstadt Einbeck, um intensiv ihre jeweils individuellen künstlerischen Persönlichkeiten durch Unterricht, Übung, Vorlesungen, Aufnahmen und Konzerte zu bereichern. Die FEUERWERK-PianistInnen erarbeiten in Einbeck ein breites Repertoire, das aus leidenschaftsvollen, virtuosen und festlichen Werken besteht. Die Ergebnisse der arbeitsreichen Woche können dann in mindestens vier FEUERWERK-Konzerten erlebt werden. Die Akademie-Konzerte werden in verschiedenen Städten Niedersachsens präsentiert.
Die Stiftung ist bemüht, im Geiste Paul Hindemiths die Musik zu fördern und zu pflegen, ganz besonders die zeitgenössische Musik, die Werke Paul Hindemiths zu verbreiten und Verständnis für seine Kunst zu wecken, wissenschaftliche Forschung auf dem Gebiet der Musik zu veranlassen sowie die Veröffentlichungen und die Verbreitung der daraus entstehenden Arbeiten zu unterstützen.
